Do you have the natural hate for the Cubs the way a lot of Sox fans do?
Jimmy Pardo: No I do not understand it. You like baseball or you don’t like baseball as far as I’m concerned. I don’t get the joy the way that [some] Sox fans get when the Cubs lose. And vice versa, I don’t get the “Sux” shirts or hats. I do not understand it at all.
What was it like throwing out the first pitch at a Sox game?
Jimmy Pardo: It was one of the highlights of my career. Growing up a Sox fan, as a kid, you have these dreams, “I’m going to play baseball one day, I’m going to play for the White Sox.” As those dreams go away, you realize you don’t have the talent, you figure out your way in life. Then you’re in high school dreaming one day you’ll host “The Tonight Show.” “I’ll be a comedian, I’ll host ‘The Tonight Show.’ That’ll be great.”
Then you realize that only a select handful get to host that show, but there I was in 2012 … I was in town doing shows, working with Conan, and they announced that I would throw out the first pitch: “From ‘Conan,’ comedian Jimmy Pardo.”
So then I’m kind of really living that dream, throwing out the first pitch for my team, representing a talk show that I work on as a comedian. My wife, my dad, and my son are there; it doesn’t get better than that.
Favorite moment working for Conan?
Jimmy Pardo: When I filled in for Andy Richter. Those two days were amazing. When I got the phone call that Andy had to miss a couple of days, would I be willing to co-host [laughs]? I don’t think they finished the question and I said, “yes.”
Are you interested in taking over the “Late Late Show”?
Jimmy Pardo: Patton Oswalt was nice enough to tweet out “While it’s sad that Craig Ferguson is leaving, the only solution would be to hire Jimmy Pardo,” and I agree with that. That’s how I’ll answer that question.
I think if they offered it to me, I’d take it in a heartbeat and I’d flourish. I think that’s exactly what late night needs, a third Jimmy.
